Write Your Story; Save the World.
The world needs more people sharing their authentic truth. Don’t let your fears prevent you from putting your work out there.
Writer is one of those sexy careers. You know the type. The ones where when you tell someone what you do, they often light up. Their eyes widen and they smile. “Ooo,” they’ll coo, “what do you write about?”
That’s when the disappointment sometimes hits them. If you respond with, “mostly agriculture,” like I often do, those bright eyes start to gloss over. Writing is a lot less sexy when the topic is HVAC maintenance or fertilizer inputs or farming industry labor shortages.
But while not all writing is sexy, being a writer is still awesome. Luckily, pretty much anyone can be a writer. If you know how to write, you have the skillset necessary to make it happen. Most people, however, aren’t concerned with being any old writer. They want to be a good writer. That is a bit trickier.
For one thing, good writing—like beauty—is very much in the eye of the beholder. I’ve written things that I think are trash, only to have an editor or friend or someone random on the internet tell me that it was exactly what they wanted or needed to read. Similarly, I’ve written things that I think are amazingly profound, only for it to go completely unnoticed.
The lesson here is that being a “good writer” is not a worthy goal. I’d rather be a writer who writes, rather than one who waits for critical acclaim or (worse yet) one who is so plagued by fear that she never writes anything at all. If you want to be a writer, don’t wait for the perfect moment. Start working on that dream today.
If you read all that and still find yourself putting off getting started, I have a theory about why. It takes many forms, but the simplest explanation is fear. Maybe you had an English teacher who told you writing was not your strong suit. Or maybe when you expressed your dreams of becoming a writer to your family, they thought it was too risky and told you to reconsider. Perhaps you have another profession entirely, but you know there’s a book inside you waiting to get out…if only you knew where the heck to start.
Whatever the circumstances, know that writing your story (or any story that feels authentic to you) will change everything. If writing is your truth, you gotta get out there and tell it. And here’s the good news: Whatever is preventing you from doing that is something you can absolutely overcome. You might need a little help, but everyone can be a writer. Yes, that includes you, too.
